In February 2008, you wrote an article about Mayor Smith’s running for what she described as her last term. Her words were: “I’d like to encourage other folks to consider taking the opportunity to plan to run for mayor because I’d like to call my third term, my last term,” she said. “I know that some will say the people decide on term limits by voting. However, in this case, I’m going to impose term limits on myself.” In the last edition of The News Connection, your paper announced her intention to run for an unprecedented fourth term. Nowhere did I see the issue of her broken promise addressed. Why not? I have nothing against our mayor, but I do have something against well-intentioned politicians who actually believe that they are the only answer to all of our problems. I voted to give a reasonably good mayor that last chance to finish her priorities. That vote would have been withheld if I thought that she planned to continue running forever.
