A retired colonel and attorney from Belton, Texas, will head up the defense of the army major who shot and killed 13 and injured 38 more in the cold-blooded shooting that occurred last week in Fort Hood. The lawyer, John Galligan, said Major Nidal Malik Hasan asked for an attorney while still on sedatives and in a guarded condition. As for investigators who want to question him; the killer made it clear that he refuses to talk to them. It’s always interesting that the same people, who profess hatred for this country, waste no time in taking full advantage of the freedoms we provide. On Monday, just 4 days after being wounded by a police officer during his rampage, Hasan met with civilian and military lawyers for about half an hour at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where he’s being treated. It was reported that on Saturday he was taken off a ventilator and was able to speak, but only with medical personnel.
As of earlier this week, the official charges had not yet been filed. Fort Hood officials have revealed little about the investigation, except to say that it is ongoing and that hundreds of witnesses have been interviewed. Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, III Corps and Fort Hood commander, has said that all indicators point toward Hasan acting alone. It’s also been revealed that he will be tried in a military court, not a civilian one. The most serious charge in military court is premeditated murder, which carries the death penalty. The Army has not yet appointed a lead prosecutor in the case, according to a Fort Hood spokesman. Let’s hope the job is given to someone with a flawless record of obtaining murder convictions. Even though this case looks like it could be won by a first year law student; we have often been grossly disappointed with the system of justice when political correctness rears its ugly head.
