Argyle was recently recognized for yet another stellar school year, finishing second among Class 3A schools in the University Interscholastic League 2007-08 Texas Dodge Dealers Lone Star Cup.
The Lone Star Cup honors the best overall athletic and academic programs in Texas, and is open to all UIL participating high schools. The Eagles – who won the same award two years ago while in Class 2A -- were second in 3A to Canyon (74 points) by a mere six points with 68. They edged out Abilene Wylie and Wimberley, who finished in a tie for third place with 64 points.
“It’s a point of emphasis across all our programs, and we talk about it a lot because we want to be a school that can get it done in all areas,” said head football coach and athletic director Todd Rodgers. “The kids are very knowledgeable, to the point where they know the scoring system and where we get points.”
One school in each of the five UIL classifications (5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A) will claim the Cup. High Schools rack up points based on their team performances in district and state championships. Winning schools in each class receive the Cup trophy and a 1,000 dollar scholarship.
Some of the big names winning this year’s Cup include Conroe The Woodlands, which edged out Southlake Carroll for the top spot in 5A by four points. Highland Park scored the most points (98) in any class while taking home the 4A Cup. In 3A, Argyle won district in cross country, football, boys’ and girls’ basketball, track, baseball and tennis. They earned 18 points alone from winning district, regional and state in academics. Where they ultimately fell short in the final standings was in baseball. The Eagle baseball team had its best season to date when they advanced to playoffs for the first time ever. But they were eventually knocked out in the area round by Canyon.
It was truly a great year for Argyle, and it’s because we have good kids and great people in place to coach them and help them achieve their goals,” Rodgers added. “We fell short by six points, but this was a huge deal for us. When we show up for something, these kids expect to win. It puts a lot of pressure on them, but that’s the type of community we live in.” Argyle has come a long way since opening its doors just over five years ago, including making a very successful jump from 2A to 3A during the 2006-07 school year. One year earlier, the Eagles won their first-ever Lone Star Cup with 66 total points. That year, Argyle won state titles in both marching band and girls’ basketball and posted a strong finish at the state academic meet.
“If we could repeat next year, that would be a huge endeavor,” Rodgers said. “Everyone starts at zero points but we’ll be facing a new set of challenges in an entirely realigned district and a different region that poses a lot of great competition. But we had a successful spring and it’s important to us.”
