This is the time of the year when our hearts open even more for those in need. Perhaps it’s because the Christmas season makes us increasingly aware of the blessings we enjoy and the knowledge that many others aren’t so fortunate. If you truly understand that the birth of Christ signifies sacrifice, you will grasp the significance of sharing your blessings with other children of God. The North Texas area has a reputation for our compassion toward the needy. Because of the wilting economy and the high unemployment rate, the need is even greater this year. Hence, in addition to the many groups who come to the rescue year round, as well as during the holidays, some are busy organizing other sources to feed and clothe the people who may have been overlooked. Yes, many area residents are very well off and might assume that everyone is in the same position. Not so! There are families nearby who just need a little help to get them through some temporary difficulties.
It could happen to any one of us (and has happened to many, who can easily relate). One of those groups helping to collect food and other necessities is being organized by Highland Village Police Detective Andrea Musick and the HV Chief of Police Ed O’Bara. Others include Jan Balekian, who, with her husband Bob, own the famous Pumpkin Patch in Flower Mound. Jan, along with other volunteers, including Flower Mound Mayor Jody Smith and her husband Steve, can be seen during the holidays working inside the Kroger Supermarket at FM1171 and FM2499; handing out information to shoppers about ways to feed the hungry. There are many others who selflessly represent the heart and soul of the community. This is a joyous time of the year and most of us are busy with our shopping needs and family gatherings. But, if we just stop for a moment and remember the true meaning of Christmas, we’ll realize that bringing hope and joy to others is what it’s all about. We are truly blessed to have Andrea, Ed, Jan, Jody and Steve leading the way for the rest of us.
